ICT Prosecutor Golam Arif Tipu passed away

Senior lawyer and linguist Ghulam Arif Tipu, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT), has passed away. He was 93 years and 5 months old at the time of his death.

He died on Friday morning at 8:20 am while undergoing treatment at the capital’s LabAid Hospital. Prosecutor of the tribunal Mukhlesur Rahman confirmed this information.

According to the family, he was admitted to this hospital last Tuesday. He was diagnosed with pneumonia. He died of asphyxiation.

Golam Arif Tipu’s body will be taken from LabAid Hospital to Minister’s Apartments on New Bailey Road.

Golam Arif Tipu was born on August 28, 1931 in Kamalakantpur village of Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. He completed his graduation from Rajshahi College and took his Master’s degree from Dhaka University.

From 1954 to 1956 he was the General Secretary of Bangladesh Students Union. He also contributed to language movement and liberation war. He was the joint convener of the All Party Student Struggle Committee.

Golam Arif Tipu was awarded the Ekushey Padak by the government in 2019 for his role in the language movement.
