Iceland will also support the Czech initiative, which aims to purchase artillery ammunition for Ukraine from countries outside the European Union. He assumes that he will contribute approximately two million euros to the purchase of hundreds of thousands of artillery shells. The government in Reykjavík announced this on its website today.

“It is necessary that we continue to strongly support Ukraine,” said Icelandic Foreign Minister Bjarni Benediktsson. “In this way, we contribute not only to the defense of the people of Ukraine, but also (to the defense of) the international rule of law in a broader context and our own security interests,” added the head of diplomacy of the island country.

Fire superiority

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala came up with a proposal for the purchase of artillery ammunition for Ukraine outside the EU member states at an extraordinary EU summit at the beginning of February. Later, at the Munich Security Conference, President Peter Pavol informed about the possibility of purchasing 800,000 grenades for the Ukrainians in third countries.

So far, roughly twenty countries have joined the purchase, from Canada to Germany, Lithuania, Finland or the Netherlands and Luxembourg to Poland. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ján Lipavský, told journalists in Brussels a week ago that Prague has so far received funds from allies for the purchase of the first 300,000 units and another 500,000 units are under negotiation.

Czech National Security Adviser Tomáš Pojar told ČTK in mid-March that the first deliveries should arrive in Ukraine in June at the latest. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal recently expressed hope that, thanks to the Czech initiative, Ukrainian troops will have enough ammunition from April to defend their defense lines against an enemy that has superior firepower.

Support for women

Reykjavík also plans to support women in the Ukrainian military by purchasing equipment such as uniforms, bulletproof vests, medical and hygiene supplies worth ISK 75 million. The percentage of women in the military has increased significantly in recent years, Reykjavík said in a statement.

Server Ukrainska pravda noted today that at the end of last year, Iceland joined two other initiatives to support Ukraine – one focused on the disposal of unexploded ordnance and the other on information technology. The Icelandic government writes on its website that although it does not have its own army or military equipment, it has supported Ukraine in various ways since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
