Iberdrola will promote the development of new studies that allow the execution of offshore wind energy generation projects on the Brazilian coast.

This has been agreed with the government of Rio de Janeiro after the signing of a memorandum of understanding through its subsidiary Neoenergia. This event took place within the framework of the Brazilian Offshore Wind Summit 2024

This is the fourth signing made by the company for the development of offshore wind generation in the country. In addition, the feasibility of implementing other similar projects in other areas of Brazil, such as Rio Grande do Sul or Ceará.

Laura Porto, director of Renewables at Neoenergia, highlighted that the energy company has “the legacy of being a pioneer” in the development of onshore wind power in the country, although she considered that it is very important that the territory “prepares and positions itself” for development. of offshore wind.

“For the growth of this new market, it is necessary to define a regulatory framework capable of providing legal and regulatory security, in addition to guaranteeing the most assertive allocation of investments,” he noted.

For his part, the acting secretary of Energy and Marine Economy of Rio de Janeiro, Felipe Peixoto, stated that This agreement “will be of great value for the State to promote offshore wind energy in the future.”

The Government of Brazil estimates that the available power will be about 700 gigawatts for offshore wind in the country.

This type of energy is one of Iberdrola’s big bets for 2027, constituting 50% of the investments of 15.5 billion euros planned for green energy in the next three years.

At the end of 2023, The energy group had 1,793 MW ‘offshore’ installed and another 3,000 MW that will come into operation before 2027.
