History and few women centric films

Female characters have been dominant since the earliest days of cinema. Women-led or women-centric films have also been made with stories and male characters. This genre began to prevail from the silent era (up to 1927).

Even in the early sixties of the 20th century, women-centric movies were made. However, this genre became most popular in the thirties and forties. It increased after World War II. But by the 60s, the genre of ‘female-centric cinema’ had already disappeared. In Hollywood, however, in the second half of the last century, such films were seen being made. The films of George Cukor, Douglas Sirk, Max Ophuls and Joseph von Sternberg among the directors of that time were widely discussed in this genre. Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, etc. took a place in the hearts of the audience among the actresses.

The beginnings of this genre can be found in several films by the legendary American filmmaker DW Griffith. His works include ‘The Adventure of Dolly’, ‘The Black Viper’, ‘The Call of the Wild’, ‘A Woman’s Way’ etc.

However, there is a debate on whether women-centric cinema can be a specific genre. Feminist and academic Mary Ann Doan has argued that women’s film is not a pure genre; Because it is a hybrid of other genres like melodrama, film noir, gothic and horror films.

Despite the controversies, some women-centric movies have been produced in Hollywood in the last two decades. Let’s take a look at them –
