Head of exporters: The president should open doors for our companies abroad. This has not happened so far, they are demotivated

According to the Swiss Institute for Management Development, Slovakia has worsened in the world ranking of competitiveness for 2023. It fell by four places, namely to 53rd place out of 64 monitored economies. Experts and business regularly point out what competences the president has in the field of economic diplomacy and how he can help the economy. Did you follow the election campaign?

In particular, I looked at the key discussions. I was personally surprised that the entire campaign revolved around specific cases, examples, conflicts, how the president would proceed with a specific nomination, and so on. I missed a broader discussion about the vision of Slovakia, about what the president can bring to the republic abroad.

From our point of view, of course, the support of entrepreneurs, export, competitiveness and the overall brand of Slovakia is also important.

In the past, you worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You dealt with economic diplomacy and organizing business missions, today you unite hundreds of companies in the Council of Slovak Exporters. I assume that as the head of this organization you were looking for mentions of economic support. During the campaign, did you also notice candidates who would comment on this topic?

With the exception of the debate in your HNClub, where Peter Pellegrini was a guest, I did not catch any other discussions on this topic. In a certain way, the topic resonated here, which we, as the Council of Slovak Exporters, were also a part of.

I am talking about the overall organization of business delegations, which is not set up well. We are of the opinion that entrepreneurs in this area are not supported as they deserve. The president plays an important role here.

The term of office is ending and there is an opportunity to take stock. It is necessary to look at the statistics, at how the neighboring countries are doing it, and to be inspired, how to implement the support of economic diplomacy better, and to support the economic interest of Slovakia abroad. And here, in my opinion, the president plays an important role.

You communicate with export-oriented companies on a daily basis. Do you also register an interest in the current presidential elections? Does it matter who will be the new president and how he will approach the support of economic diplomacy?
