Jurgen Klopp announced last night that he will leave Liverpool’s dugout at the end of the season. For Allred supporters, it was like thunder without a cloud. In 2015, Klopp became synonymous with Liverpool after taking charge of the English club. He has transformed a club that has rediscovered its golden past into one of Europe’s superpowers. Liverpool have won almost every possible title except the Europa League. But Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the end of this season.
It’s bad news for the fans, but good news for the opponents. Liverpool’s biggest rival in England is Manchester City, especially considering the performance of the last few years. Pep Guardiola’s men have won the Premier League title five times in the last six seasons. On the other hand, when City lost, Liverpool won the 2019-2020 season. Jurgen Klopp has suffered the most for City in the last few seasons. Guardiola survived the announcement of the departure of the German coach. The City coach said yesterday that he does not sleep well at night because of Klopp.
City boss Guardiola has responded to Klopp’s announcement that he is leaving Liverpool. He joked that City and his life would be much easier if Klopp left Liverpool. The 53-year-old Spanish coach jokingly said that he will sleep better from next season.
Manchester City beat Tottenham 1-0 in the FA Cup match yesterday. The Klopp topic naturally came up in the press conference after the match. Then Guardiola joked, ‘I can sleep in peace. The nights before the match against Liverpool were like a nightmare.
Although happy with the announcement of Klopp’s departure from Liverpool, Guardiola will miss the tactical battle with him, ‘Of course I will miss him (Klopp). I was surprised by the news (of leaving Liverpool) like everyone else. I feel like a part of Man City has been lost. Without him and Liverpool, Man City’s season cannot be explained. It is impossible.’
Guardiola started his coaching career in 2008 with Barcelona dug out. Moved to Bayern Munich after spending 5 seasons at the Catalan club. He moved to England in 2016 after spending three seasons in Germany. Guardiola has had to deal with the tactics of many high-profile coaches in a coaching career spanning almost a decade and a half. But the city coach thinks that Klopp is the toughest opponent.
Guardiola also considers Liverpool to be City’s biggest rival, ‘They (Liverpool) are our biggest rival. When he (Klopp) was at Borussia Dortmund, I was at Bayern Munich. Personally he has hurt me the most.’
Although Liverpool and Klopp are the biggest obstacles for City, the Premier League will miss Klopp’s charisma, Guardiola said, ‘I think the Premier League is going to miss his charisma. Especially, the way he plays his team. It’s always nice to see Liverpool playing positive football on the pitch. They want to win every match. Liverpool are always tough opponents. I wish him all the best.’
Regarding the reason for leaving, Klopp said that he does not have the strength to do the same thing over and over again. But Guardiola believes Klopp will be back in the dugout again in ten years’ time, ‘maybe he won’t want to admit it, but I think he will. I know it. Maybe in ten years he will regain his strength.’
Not that Klopp has to return to the dugout of the club. Guardiola thinks that Klopp should return to coaching even if it is with the national team, ‘I don’t need to know whether it is the national team or another team. But football needs a personality like him.’
Guardiola hopes to go to dinner together even if there is a duel with Klopp, ‘I dream of having dinner together. Hopefully we can find time next season to have dinner or drinks together. We deserve it.’
