GK Shamim granted bail in arms case

The High Court granted bail to Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim, a contractor who was sentenced to life in the Arms Act case, the expelled leader of the Jubo League, who was discussed in the casino scandal.

In the hearing on this matter on Wednesday High Court Justice S.M. The bench consisting of Abdul Mobin and Justice Md. Mahmud Hasan Talukder gave this order.

After the order, Deputy Attorney General Samira Tarannum Rabeya Miti said the court granted bail to GK Shamim. A note has been given to the Attorney General immediately informing about the matter.

Fida M during the hearing. Kamal told the court that GK Shamim had an arms licence, which the trial court had also mentioned in its judgment. But still he was sentenced for violation of Rule 25 of the Issue, Renewal and Use of Firearms License Rules, 2016. As per Section 19 (e) of the Arms Act 1878 which is totally illegal. Because a violation of the policy does not constitute a crime, it cannot be punished.

Earlier on September 25, 2022, Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal 1 judge Sheikh Samidul Islam sentenced 8 people including GK Shamim to life imprisonment in the arms case. Apart from GK Shamim, the remaining 7 accused are his bodyguards.

On September 20, 2019, 8 firearms, bullets, FDR of Tk 165 crore and cash of around Tk 181 lakh and liquor were seized from GK Shamim’s house and office in an anti-casino raid. 3 cases were registered against him under Arms, Drugs and Money Laundering Act.

Before his arrest, Shamim sometimes introduced himself as Jubo League’s cooperative affairs secretary. Sometimes he introduced himself as the Vice President of Narayanganj District Awami League. He used to walk back and forth with 7 armed bodyguards. Almost all the major works of the Public Works Department were handled by his organization.

On February 5, 2020, the court framed charges against Shamim and his 7 bodyguards in the arms case.

On October 27, 2019, RAB submitted a charge sheet to the court against Shamim and his 7 bodyguards. The court took cognizance of the complaint on January 2, 2020.
