Ghazaria eviction operation attacked, police injured 8

Officials of Police and BIWTA were attacked during an operation to evict illegal structures on the banks of Meghna River in Ghazaria Upazila. Eight people including two policemen were injured.

The incident took place in Basurchar and Charcharshi areas of Guagachia Union of the upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The injured are BIWTA member Md. Mostafa, Saiful Islam, Ansar commander Anwar who took part in the evacuation operation, BIWTA medical member Munsi Abdullah, traffic supervisor Shahidul Islam, laborer Ismail, Ghazaria police member Mamun Rana, Abdul Hasem. All the injured received first aid at Ghazaria Upazila Health Complex.

According to the police and local sources, hundreds of structures including several industrial factories have been built along the Meghna river bank in Basurchar illegally by occupying the river. On Sunday morning, BIWTA started an evacuation operation in a two kilometer area from Basurchar Launch Ghat to Daukandi Bridge. Narayanganj Zone Executive Magistrate Hasan Maruf and Meghna Zone Deputy Director Sharif Islam were in the eviction operation.

From morning till noon, the 3,500 feet long boundary wall occupied by Fakir’s group was demolished. At around 1 pm, the operation was started at the Pacific Industrial Factory in that area. At that time, a boiler of the industrial factory burst. At that time, the workers of the company attacked the officers, employees and members of the law and order forces who took part in the operation. 8 people were injured. Later, the police fired 13 rounds to control the situation. Later, the eviction campaign stalled. Workers blocked them for a long time.

In this regard, BIWTA’s Meghna Zone Deputy Director Sharif Islam said, “When the eviction of the illegal encroachment of the Pacific industrial factory started, the workers of the company attacked us, in which 8 people, including the police, were injured.”

The incident happened on the first day of the two-day campaign. The operation was suspended due to a defect in the vehicles used in the evacuation operation.

In this regard, Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar-Gazaria Circle) Thandar Khairul Hasan said, ‘Additional police were sent after receiving information about the attack. 13 rounds of blanks were fired to bring the situation under control. In the afternoon, the police rescued the officers and employees who participated in the operation. The injured received first aid. Police are working to arrest those involved in the incident.
