Former IGP veteran freedom fighter Nurul Anwar passed away

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vir Muktijodha was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. Nurul Anwar passed away. He died while undergoing treatment at LabAid Cancer Hospital, Green Road in the capital on Sunday.

Nurul Anwar is survived by his wife, one son, one daughter and well-wishers. His nephew Abu Hena Morshed Zaman is currently working as Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications.

Hero freedom fighter Md. Nurul Anwar was born on December 31, 1950 in Barbakund, Sitakund Upazila, Chittagong. His father was a senior official of Bangladesh Railway. He was directly involved in Bangabandhu’s politics by carrying Bangabandhu’s ideology from his student life.

At the call of Bangabandhu, he directly participated as a freedom fighter in the great liberation war of 1971. Joined Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) Cadre as Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1973. During his service life, he was the last Sub-Divisional Police Administrator of Gopalganj Sub-Division. Moreover, he was the first Deputy Commissioner of North Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police besides performing the duties of Superintendent of Police in 5 districts including Chuadanga, Kishoreganj, Brakshanbaria, Rangamati.

As Superintendent of Police of Kishoreganj in 1990, he led the first crackdown on terrorist militants in Bangladesh by destroying the terrorist hideout of alleged Pir Motiur in Pakundia. Nurul Anwar was a freedom fighter and a staunch devotee of Bangabandhu in 2003 when the then BNP government removed him just a day before he was promoted to DIG.

Later, he was reinstated and promoted to the post of DIG during the caretaker government as per the judgment of the administrative tribunal. When Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formed the government in 2009, Nurul Anwar was later promoted to the post of IGP of Police while still in PRL.

During his retirement he was a regular columnist for various newspapers including the daily Kale Kanth. Apart from newspapers, he regularly participated in talk shows as a security analyst on various TV channels. He was a writer. Many books written by him on society, administration and history were published.
