Former Member of Parliament of Comilla-5 (Burichong-Brahmanpara) Constituency veteran freedom fighter Advocate Abul Hashem Khan has passed away (Innalillahi wa inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at CMH hospital in the capital today at around 5 o’clock in the morning. He was 69 years old. He was under treatment in the hospital for quite some time.
Abul Hashem Khan’s death was confirmed by his daughter Nazia Hashem Tanji.
Nazia Hashem Tanji said, ‘Abu passed away at CMH in Dhaka at 5:10 am on Wednesday. The first funeral will be held in front of the Jatiya Sangsad No. 6 building outside Johor.
Abul Hashem Khan was the Vice President of Comilla South District Awami League and President of Burichong Upazila Awami League. On July 14, 2021, he was elected MP of Awami League unopposed in the by-election of Comilla-5 seat. After the death of former Law Minister Advocate Abdul Matin Khosru on April 14 of that year, Hashem Khan took the seat of Awami League. Hashem Khan was also nominated by Awami League in the recently concluded 12th National Assembly elections. He lost to independent candidate MA Jaher in the election. Hashem was sick and hospitalized even before the polls. His daughter Nazia Hashem Tanji and other leaders and activists campaigned for him.
Abul Hasem Khan was born on December 31, 1955 in North village of Burichong. In his political career, he became the president of Burichong Upazila Chhatra League in 1976, the organizing secretary of Upazila Awami League in 1983 and became the general secretary three years later. Later in 2003, Hasem Khan was elected as the president of Upazila Awami League.
Apart from this, he served as Vice President of Comilla South District Awami League and President of District Lawyers Association. At the time of his death, he left behind a wife, three daughters, a son and numerous political colleagues and well-wishers.
