A fire has occurred in an election campaign office of Bangladesh Nationalist Movement (BNM) in Chapainawabganj-3 Constituency. The incident took place near Shankarbati Eidgah in Chapainawabganj municipal area around 11:30 pm on Friday.
The party’s candidate Abdul Mateen claimed that the arson was planned, but the police said it was not yet certain.
Abdul Mateen said that the supporters of the opposing candidate deliberately set fire to the election office to intimidate the voters. Poster-festoons and other materials in the office got burnt in the fire. Later, local people and workers-supporters rushed to control the fire.
Mintu Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station, said that the straw kept on the floor of the election office caught fire. The fire spread and the election office got burnt. However, it was not confirmed how the fire started.
