The election commission has declared the candidature of Awami League candidate Shamim Haque from Faridpur-3 constituency as invalid due to his dual citizenship.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal along with other Election Commissioners announced this verdict at Election Commission Building in Agargaon on Friday morning.

As Shamim Haque is a dual citizen, a partial hearing on the validity of his candidature was held at the EC on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal. The EC later adjourned the hearing and set the judgment date for Friday.

Shamim Haque’s candidature was appealed by his rival independent candidate AK Azad on charges of dual citizenship.

Meanwhile, the EC has declared the candidature of Barisal-5 seat independent candidate Sadiq Abdullah as an independent candidate due to his dual citizenship.

EC has rejected the appeal of Salahuddin Ahmed of Cox’s Bazar-1 Awami League. As a result, his candidature remains cancelled.

The EC has canceled the candidature of Shammi Ahmed of Nauka for Barisal-4 seat. Pankaj Debnath’s candidature as an individual will remain.
