Election campaigning after 8pm, fined

In the 12th National Assembly elections, two people were arrested by the police for violating the rules and campaigning after 8 pm in Lakshmipur-3 constituency. At this time, microphones, equipment and CNG-powered auto-rickshaws used for campaigning were seized.

Later both of them were fined 5000 taka by the mobile court, in default of payment they were sentenced to another month’s imprisonment. Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Maqbul Hossain passed the ruling by sitting a mobile court yesterday at around 10:30 pm.

The convicts are – campaigner Sekantar Ali Badsha and autorickshaw driver Delwar Hossain.

Maqbul Hossain said that election campaigning cannot be done after 8 pm. But the convicts violated the parliamentary election code of conduct by campaigning. They have been fined.

Meanwhile, on the way from Sadar Upazila’s Laharkandi village after 8 pm on Monday, members of the city police outpost seized the microphone along with the auto-rickshaw. According to city police outpost sources, campaigning time has been fixed from 2 pm to 8 pm as per election campaign policy. But even after 8 pm, the campaign was carried out on the mic with the boat symbol breaking the rules. The detainees violated the rules by campaigning after the specified time.

Zahirul Alam, in-charge (inspector) of Laxmipur city police outpost, said that two people including the campaigner were arrested for violating the rules and conducting the campaign after the specified time. They were handed over to mobile courts. Later they were fined by the court.
