The Election Commission (EC) has filed a case against Mustafizur Rahman, candidate of Awami League in Chittagong-16 constituency, for beating up a journalist of Independent Television and violating the code of conduct. Banshkhali Upazila Election Officer Harun Molla filed this case in Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court today at around 11 am.
State lawyer Sheikh Iftekhar Saimum Chowdhury said that the journalists were bribed by Banshkhali MP and his supporters when they went to collect news during the submission of nominations on November 30. Taking cognizance of this incident, the EC ordered to file a case. In view of this, a case was filed this morning with boat candidate Mostafizur Rahman as the main accused. Another 20 to 30 unidentified people have been accused in this.
In this case, Mustafiz has been ordered to appear in court on January 3.
Earlier on last November 30, when submitting the nomination papers, Mostafizur Rahman went to the Deputy Commissioner’s office with a hundred supporters to submit the nomination papers. Mustafizur and his supporters got into a heated argument when they asked whether there was a violation of the electoral code of conduct for submitting nomination papers with so many supporters.
At one point, Mustafiz and his supporters physically assaulted and abused Independent Television journalist Rakib Uddin. Later, law enforcement officials brought the situation under control. The Election Investigation Committee mourned him in this incident.
