United States Democratic Senator Dick Durbin commented that it is sad that the main opposition party did not come to the Bangladesh election. He made this comment in a post on social media X.
In that post, Dick Durbin said that the election was held last Sunday with the peaceful participation of billions of Bangladeshis. Nevertheless, violence and government intimidation of the opposition have marred the country’s election and pre-election process. It is unfortunate that the main opposition party did not participate in the elections. Members of the opposition and civil society activists have faced torture and mass arrests that have disrupted the pre-election process.
We call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to keep her promise to uphold democracy and stop abusing democratic institutions. Along with that, we are calling all the parties for a meaningful discussion. I also call on them to commit to stopping violence. Those involved in violence should also be held accountable. Freedom of speech and people’s right to participate and express their views should be preserved after the election.
