Independent candidate for Naogaon-2 (Dhamirhat-Patnitala) constituency, veteran freedom fighter Aminul Haque (75) passed away. He died on Friday around 4:30 am while undergoing treatment in a hospital in Dhaka.
Freedom fighter Aminul Haque, former mayor of Najipur municipality, son of deceased Noor Mohammad of Laxmanpara village of Dhamirhat upazila, left behind a wife, a son and numerous well-wishers. Aminul Haque was elected as the Mayor of Najipur Municipality of Naogaon Patnitala Upazila in 2006. He is the former Forest and Environment Affairs Secretary of Naogaon District Awami League. Apart from this, he served as General Secretary of Patnitala Upazila Awami League several times from 1986 to 2006.
It is known that he was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka due to illness and heart attack on December 27 and died there while undergoing treatment.
Aminul Haque wanted Awami League’s nomination to participate in the 12th National Assembly elections from Naogaon-2 seat. Not getting it, he submitted nomination papers to contest the election as an independent candidate. But the Election Commission and Returning Officer pointed out various inconsistencies in his nomination paper and canceled his candidature. Later, Aminul Haque filed a writ in the High Court to get back the candidature. After the hearing of the writ, the High Court ruled that the candidature of Aminul Haque was valid on Wednesday. He was allotted the eagle symbol at the Naogaon District Commissioner and Returning Officer’s office on Thursday.
District Commissioner and District Returning Officer Golam Mawla said, after his death, the polling in that seat will be suspended or not and a public notification will be issued with the decision.
In the Dhamirhat-Patnitala constituency (Naogaon-2), the government party MP Shahiduzzaman Sarkar, Jatiya Party candidate Ed. Tofazzal Hossain, Awami League independent MP candidate Engineer Akhtarul Alam is also contesting this seat.
