Two persons died of headache and fever in Manikganj this month. ICDDR’s expert team confirmed that one of them was infected with Nipah virus. However, the district health department could not provide any accurate information about the others.

One who died under treatment was Md. Babul Mia (38) of Manta village of Putail Union of Sadar Upazila. The other one was Lutfar Rahman (27) of Ghosta village of the same union.

Dr. Manikganj Civil Surgeon confirmed the fact that Babul Mia died. Chairman Mohidur Rahman has confirmed the matter of Moazzem Ali Khan and another Lutfar Rahman in writing on the pad of Putail Union Parishad.

According to the district civil surgeon, the family of the deceased and the local Union Parishad office, on January 16 Babul Mia, the son of Mainuddin of Manta village of Putail Union of Sadar Upazila and a cosmetics trader, was admitted to Sadar Hospital with fever, headache, muscle pain and sore throat. The next day on January 17, his condition deteriorated further. At one point, doctors informed the expert team of International Center for Diarrhea Research Bangladesh (ICDDR’B) thinking that Babul Mia might be infected with Nipah virus. Then the doctor from ICDDR’B came and examined Babul’s health and advised him to be transferred to popular hospital in Dhaka as Nipah virus was detected. He died on the night of January 27 yesterday under treatment.

On the other hand, Lutfar Rahman (27), son of Nakimuddin of Ghosta village of Putail Union, was infected with Nipah virus and died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka on January 16. Sadar Upazila Putail Union member of ward number one. Jasim Uddin confirmed this. However, the district health department has no information about the death of Lutfar Rahman.

UP member Jasim Uddin said on the phone, “When Lutfar Rahman gets headache and fever after consuming raw date juice, he buys medicine from the local Ghosta market without taking it seriously. But as the days went by, his physical condition deteriorated and he was taken to Dhaka for better treatment, where he died while undergoing treatment.’

Dr. Manikganj Civil Surgeon. Moazzem Ali Khan said, ‘Babul Mia died under treatment in Dhaka after being infected with Nipah virus after consuming date juice. Such information is known to us and his information is on record. But we have no information about the death of the other person Lutfar Rahman. I heard from you. I am now investigating.’
