Myanmar’s junta government has emerged as the worst government in the world. They have been at the bottom of various international indices due to repression since the seizure of power by ousting Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. This information is known from a report of the media Irrawaddy.
On February 1, 2021, the junta forces seized power in Myanmar. A coup overthrew the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
After that, at least 4,500 civilians were killed in the torture and persecution of the junta government in three years. 25 thousand people have to be imprisoned. Junta forces destroyed about 78 thousand houses by raiding different parts of the country.
Due to these reasons, Myanmar’s junta government has been named as the ‘worst’ government in various global indicators. According to the Global Peace Index 2023, Myanmar is one of the most dangerous countries in the Asia-Pacific region. They are at the top of the list in terms of imprisoning political opponents and persecuting journalists.
According to US think tank Freedom House, Myanmar scores zero out of 40 points on the Political Rights Index.
Since the 2021 coup, at least 18.6 million people have been living in poverty, which is about a third of Myanmar’s total population. The United Nations says they urgently need relief aid. The organization has also warned that famine may occur in the country at any time.
Myanmar has also been declared as one of the world’s hunger hotspots. According to the World Food Programme, about 1.29 million citizens are facing food shortages. 2.1 million people displaced in just 3 years due to civil war.
