Cyclone leaves several dead in East African country

At least 18 people have died and thousands have been displaced as tropical cyclone Gamane hit Madagascar this week, Reuters reported on Friday.

According to a report by the National Risk and Disaster Management Agency (BNGRC), hundreds of people have lost their homes after the cyclone on Wednesday and Thursday. The storm was initially predicted to only pass near Madagascar, but it deviated from its planned track.

The report said three people were injured while four others remained missing, with a total of around 7,000 people affected.

“Such a cyclone is rare. His movement is almost motionless,” said the Director General of the National Disaster Management Authority BNGRC, General Elack Andriakaja.

The cyclone hit Madagascar’s northeast coast near Vohémar on Wednesday morning, with sustained winds averaging 150 km/h and gusts of up to 210 km/h. It gradually weakened and dissipated by Thursday afternoon, according to a BNGRC report Thursday. The cyclone led to the collapse of roads and bridges in the northern part of the country.
