A court in Kathmandu sentenced Nepali leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichane to eight years in a rape case.
The Kathmandu Post reported that the Kathmandu District Court had found the allegations of rape of an 18-year-old woman against Lamichan to be true. Yesterday, on January 10, he was sentenced to 8 years in jail and fined 3 lakh rupees. He also directed Lamichane to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the victim.
Lamichan’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire said that they will appeal against this verdict in the high court.
In September 2022, after an arrest warrant was issued against Lamichane, he was stripped of the captaincy and temporarily banned by the Nepal Cricket Association. At that time he was playing for Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League. The franchise fired him after he was informed of the arrest warrant. When he returned home in October, he was arrested by the police.
Lamichane returned to the national team last February amid legal proceedings. Despite playing against Namibia and Scotland, the opposing players did not shake hands with him. However, he played in the World Cup qualifiers and Asia Cup for the national team.
