Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Joint General Secretary of Awami League. Hasan Mahmood said about the report published in CPD’s recent press conference that they did not do any research. A report was prepared by collecting some newspaper cuttings and a press conference was held in that light. Their statements are nothing but pure lies.
He said this in response to questions from reporters about the information provided by the Center for Policy Dialogue-CPD after laying wreaths at the portrait of the Father of the Nation installed at the BTV Chittagong center on the occasion of the 59th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Television in the minister’s home district Chittagong port city on Monday.
Hasan Mahmud said, “Although research is mentioned in the press conference of CPD, in reality research takes a lot of time and there is a lot of data. But the CPD has done a lot of sneaking and misrepresentation in preparing and publishing this report.’
Giving examples one by one, the minister mentioned, ‘As CPD has said, 75 percent of our development budget is dependent on foreign countries. But actually 35 percent of our current budget is aid-dependent or foreign-dependent. At one point it fell below 20 percent. In recent times it has increased to 35 percent due to foreign borrowing for some projects. But CPD said it is 75 percent.
Inconsistency of the information of CPD. Hasan Mahmud said, ‘They said that four thousand crores of loan was given from Basic Bank. But out of four thousand crore rupees, two thousand crore rupees have already been recovered and for the remaining two thousand crore rupees, cases have been filed, cases are ongoing, recovery is in process.
CPD also said that Nabil Group has taken a loan of Tk 2,700 crore. But the fact that the debt has been recovered is not reported in the CPD report. These are intentionally hidden. CPD spoke of a group based in Chittagong. I checked with Bangladesh Bank. None of the loans in that group are classified. In other words, CPD has given false information.’
Information and Broadcasting Minister said, ‘At the same time CPD said, the size of classified loans has increased. But they only talked about the size, not the percentage. Because, classified loan rates have come down. Our GDP in 2009 was $80 billion. Now the GDP is about 500 billion or half a trillion dollars. It is natural that if the GDP increases by 6 times, the size of classified or bad loans will also increase. But what is the percentage, that is the main point. Classified loans were 10.5 percent in 2009, and now 9.93 percent. That is, it has decreased compared to then.’
Some of the CPD were associated with the management of the country in 2007-2008 and bad loans were above 10 percent, Hasan Mahmud said, thus holding a press conference with all these false information is actually intentional.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Hashan Mahmud said, “The people don’t even know that they have announced the three-day program, and no one has noticed.” Maybe the journalists noticed because they keep the news. Some day they strike, some day blockade, but no one notices. The people of Bangladesh have not noticed, I do not know whether the crow has noticed or not. These are routine programs and ridiculous.’
