Real Madrid lost to Atletico Madrid a few days ago from the quarter-finals of the Spanish Copa del Rey. The match ended in a 2-2 draw and Los Blancos lost 4-2 in extra time.
As the arch-rivals were knocked out, many thought that Barcelona were the strong contenders for this year’s Copa del Rey title. But that dream was shattered by Athletic Bilbao.
It is as if Barca lost by copying and pasting Real Madrid. Xavi Hernandez’s team advanced to the quarter-finals on Wednesday night at San Mames in Bilbao. Similar to Real Madrid’s match against Atletico Madrid, the game went into extra time as the match was tied 2-2 at full time. There, Barca conceded two more goals and lost 4-2.
In the first minute of the match, Barcelona forgot and the hosts went ahead. The visitors’ defenders failed to clear the ball in the box. Taking advantage of that opportunity, Spanish forward Gorka Guruseta gave Bilbao the lead in the 38th second of the match. Barcelona stepped up the attack after falling behind.
Shavi’s team did not take long to equalize the match. Barca equalized in the 26th minute of the match with Robert Lewandowski’s goal. The visitors took the lead six minutes later through Lamine Yamal’s goal. Barcelona went into the break with a 2-1 lead.
At the start of the second half, Vasan Oihan Sunset was cheered by the home fans who fell behind. His goal in the 49th minute equalized for Bilbao. In the end, if there are no more goals in the second half, the game goes to extra 30 minutes.
In the 107th and 121st minutes of extra time, goals from two brothers – Inaki Williams and Nico Williams – sealed Bilbao’s semi-final with a big 4-2 victory.
Both Barcelona and Real Madrid were eliminated from the quarter-finals of the Spanish Copa del Rey by the same goal in extra time. Copy-paste or what!
