The Election Commission (EC) has announced the schedule for Comilla City Corporation (CUSIC) by-elections. According to the schedule, the election will be held on March 9.
Election Commissioner (EC) Anichur Rahman gave this information to reporters at his office in Agargaon election building in the capital on Monday.
At that time, the EC said that the vote will be held through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). Continuous polling will be held from 8 am to 4 pm.
In 2022, Awami League nominated candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat became the mayor for the first time, ending the speculation. Earlier, BNP leader Monirul Hall Sakku was the mayor for two consecutive terms.
Comilla City Corporation has been without a guardian since the death of Kusik Mayor Arfanul Haque Rifat at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital on December 13. As per the rules of the Election Commission, the EC announced the schedule as there is a rule of holding elections within 90 days after the post of mayor of the city corporation falls vacant.
It should be noted that in 2011 two municipalities were merged to form a new corporation called Comilla City Corporation. The first election was held that year. Then in 2017, the area was increased almost three times by including several Union Parishads around the city. Comilla City Corporation consists of 27 wards.
