The court sentenced a Peruvian citizen named Gazacital Varado Juan Pablo Rafael to life imprisonment in the case of seizure of 3 kg of cocaine from a hotel in the capital Dhaka. In addition, a fine of 50,000 taka, three months imprisonment has been imposed. In the same case, a Pakistani national named Mohammad Mustafa Ashraf has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The court of Dhaka’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Chamidul Islam gave this verdict on Wednesday afternoon.
In this case. Mustafa, Shamsul Haque, Halima Khan Sadia, Sabrina Nasrin Tania and Md. Ashraf Naseem was acquitted as the charges against him were not proved.
Before the verdict was announced, Gazacital Varado Juan was brought to court from prison. After the verdict, he was taken back to prison with a warrant. Accused Tanya appeared on bail. However, four other accused are absconding.
Additional Public Prosecutor of the concerned court Salauddin Hawladar confirmed the sentence.
According to the source of the case, on June 11, 2013, officials of the Directorate of Narcotics Control conducted a raid on the seventh floor of the Western Hotel LaVinci Hotel after receiving information from secret sources in Tejgaon area of the capital. They entered and searched from room number 707 of that hotel. At that time, 3 kg of cocaine was seized from a travel bag belonging to a Peruvian citizen, Gazacital Varado Juan.
Inspector Mofazzal Hossain of Narcotics Control Directorate filed the case in this incident. On September 17, 2013, Narcotics Control Directorate Inspector Obaidul Karim submitted a charge sheet against the six accused after investigating the case.
On June 18, 2015, the court ordered the trial to be started by framing charges against the accused. During the trial of the case, the Adal accepted the testimony of 15 out of 25 witnesses.
