A clash took place between supporters of Shariatpur-2 constituency independent candidate Khaled Shawkat Ali and Awami League candidate AKM Enamul Haque Shamim. At least 6 people were injured. The incident took place in Paikpara area of Naria upazila on Monday evening.
After the clash, allegations of vandalism of election camps of Awami League and independent candidates were also found in Naria area.
The injured are – Upazila Chhatra League president Asaduzzaman Biplab, Upazila Awami League legal affairs secretary Siddikur Rahman and Chhatra League activist Hriday Mir. Among them, Asaduzzaman Biplab was beaten and beheaded. They are being treated at Naria Upazila Health Complex.
On the other hand, the independent candidate claimed that Tanveer Rahman Arif, member of Nadia Municipal Jubo League, Sohel Kazi, cultural secretary of Nadia Municipal Jubo League and Harun Khalifa, member of Upazila Jubo League, were injured. They are undergoing treatment at Majeda Hospital.
According to Naria police station and local sources, Awami League’s candidate for Shariatpur-2 seat is current member of parliament and deputy minister of water resources Enamul Haque Shamim. And Jubo League presidium member Khaled Shawkat Ali is running as an independent candidate. On Monday evening, Chhatra League president Asaduzzaman Biplab and some others went to Paikpara area of Naria municipality for election campaign for Awami League candidate. Independent candidate Khaled Shawkat Ali and his supporters were passing through that area. Then the supporters of Khaled Shaukat Ali and the supporters of Awami League started arguing. At one point, a clash occurred between the two sides. At this time, the cocktail explosion also happened.
Upazila Chhatra League president Asaduzzaman Biplab’s head was broken in the clash. Apart from this, Upazila Awami League legal affairs secretary Siddiqur Rahman and Chhatra League activist Hriday Mir were injured. Locals rescued them and took them to Naria Upazila Health Complex. The three leaders of Chhatra League and Awami League have been admitted to Upazila Health Complex. After this clash, allegations of vandalism of electoral camps of Awami League and independent candidates were received in Naria area.
Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders-activists held a protest march in protest of this incident at around 8:30 pm in Naria upazila headquarters. On hearing about the incident, Awami League candidate AKM Enamul Haque Shamim went to the upazila health complex to see the injured leaders around 8 pm.
Then Shamim told the reporters, ‘That Jubo League leader has become an independent candidate to create disunity and chaos in the party. The way he shed the blood of Awami League and Sheikh Hasina workers, he did not fix it. He has to take responsibility for it. We will take legal action in this regard. And I will inform the central leadership of Awami League about the incident.
When asked about this, independent candidate Khaled Shawkat Ali said, ‘I had pre-determined programs in different areas of Nadia Municipality. I was going to mass communication in a nearby area through Paikpara. On the way, a few people led by the president of the Chhatra League, Biplab, blocked the way of my workers and attacked them. Later the locals got angry and attacked them. They may be injured. They also beat and injured my workers Haroon Khalifa, Sohail and Arif Hossain.’
President of Naria Upazila Chhatra League Asaduzzaman Biplab said, ‘We were attacked in the presence of Khaled Shawkat Ali under the leadership of his workers Harun Khalifa and Arif Hossain. Many of our leaders and workers have been beaten up. My head has been beaten and cracked open. The entire incident was led by independent candidate Khaled Shawkat Ali.
Bandhan Das, a doctor at Naria Upazila Health Complex, said, ‘I treated three patients in the evening. Biplab received two injuries on his head. There had to be stitches. Besides, two others were beaten up. They have injuries on their hands and feet. Their treatment will continue in this hospital.’
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nadia Police Station Mustafizur Rahman said, ‘On Monday evening, supporters of Awami League and independent candidates came face to face in Paikpara area when they came out to campaign. At this time, the supporters of both parties chased each other and clashed. 3 supporters of the boat were injured in the clash. The injured are being treated at the hospital. Additional police have been deployed to control the situation. If complaints are received, action will be taken against the guilty.’
After that incident, Police and RAB are patrolling in Naria upazila city and its surrounding areas under the leadership of Executive Magistrate.
