“Civil disobedience gatherings.” Climate activists protested again in Germany

The environmental movement Last Generation organized further demonstrations in several cities in Germany on Saturday for the intensification of climate protection. They again took the form of road blocks, but this time their participants did not stick to the asphalt, DPA reported.

According to the police, around 130 people blocked the busy Warsaw Bridge connecting the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg in Berlin at noon.

In the Bavarian cities of Munich and Regensburg, around 120 and 150 people took part in announced and unannounced gatherings, respectively. According to the local police, the protest in Munich did not cause major traffic problems.

Near the liquefied natural gas terminal on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, 30 activists blocked the access road to the port of Sassnitz. The police ended the blockade after several hours. Police took most of the participants off the road, others left the protest site voluntarily, a police spokeswoman told DPA.

Demonstrations were also held in the cities of Freiburg and Karlsruhe and at Stuttgart airport. The police described their course as peaceful. In Bremen, about 100 climate activists occupied an intersection in the city center.

Further blockades were planned in Cologne and in Leipzig.

Activists from the Last Generation are supporters of radical measures to protect the climate, including the complete abandonment of the use of coal, oil and gas. Since the beginning of 2022, they have been organizing street blockades, with their participants sticking to road surfaces.

But this week, Last Generation officials announced that they are changing their strategy and abandoning sticking to roads and sidewalks. Instead, they called for “civil disobedience rallies” across Germany.
