Children are dying of starvation in Gaza

Children are starving to death in war-torn northern Gaza. The World Health Organization (WHO) visited Al-Awda and Kamal Adwan hospitals for the first time over the weekend since the conflict began in October last year, the BBC reported.

In a post on social media, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the agency, announced the ‘serious results’ after visiting the hospital. The WHO chief said 10 children have died due to lack of food and many more are at risk of dying due to severe malnutrition.

Last Sunday, Gaza’s Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health reported that at least 15 children died due to malnutrition and dehydration in the valley’s Kamal Adwan Hospital. Another child died on Sunday at a hospital in the southern city of Rafah.

According to the World Health Organization, children in northern Gaza are suffering from severe malnutrition, dying of starvation, severe shortages of fuel, food and medical supplies, and hospital buildings have been destroyed. About 300,000 people are getting little food and water.

Earlier, the UN said last week that famine in Gaza was ‘almost inevitable’. At least 576,000 people across the Gaza Strip, a quarter of the territory’s total population, face catastrophic levels of food insecurity, a senior UN official said. In addition, one in six children under the age of two in northern Gaza suffer from severe malnutrition, the UN official said.
