Shahadat Hossain alias Matiur Rahman (30), the joint convener of Rajshahi’s Bagha Upazila Chhatra Dal, who escaped after being chased by miscreants, surrendered at Benapole Port Police Station in Jessore.
He committed suicide by going to Benapole police station on Wednesday morning. Later in the night, Shahadat Hossain was handed over to Rajshahi police station.
Bagha Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sabuj Rana and Port Police Station OC Suman Kumar Bhakta confirmed the matter. Shahadat Hossain is the son of Abdul Khalek of Moshidpur village in Bagha upazila. He does business in the area.
Bagha Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sabuj Rana said, ‘Shahadat went to Benapole police station and surrendered early today. Details about the surrender will be known only after taking him to Rajshahi from that police station. A decision will be taken after talking to him about legal action or not.’
According to the family, Shahadat was not available since Monday night and the family lodged a complaint with the police station. His father Abdul Khalek filed a written complaint at Bagha police station on Tuesday afternoon. His house is in Moshidpur village of Bagha upazila. Went to Naogaon on business last Saturday. Later he returned home from there on Sunday night. On Monday evening, Bagha went to Bazar to collect money for selling onions. 4 lakh 20 thousand rupees were supposed to be received from there. He did not return home with that money. The family members came to know that a group of people chased him near the Padma river. His phone is switched off. His cloak and flashlight were found on the road in Mashidpur.
Shahadat’s wife Swapna Khatun said, ‘Her husband can’t even stay at home because of his BNP politics. Her husband has to stay in different places. On Monday evening, a group of people were chasing Shahadat in Padma pasture near the house, a neighbor named Shakeel said. So they are afraid. He had so much money with him. Can’t understand if he was robbed or arrested. Later on Wednesday afternoon, Shahadat’s wife came to know about getting him. The police have spoken to them.
Swapna Khatun also said, ‘They also do not understand how Shahadat went to Benapole. There is no case against him. Why should he surrender there, he asked.
How did Shahadat go to Benapole? The family members said that they will know about the incident when people return from Benapole Port Police Station to his family from Rajshahi.
