A case of defamation has been filed against the editor of a local newspaper for writing Anwarul Karim Farooq, Information and Research Secretary of District Awami League, independent candidate for Feni-2 constituency in the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections as a ‘dummy candidate’. A defamation case of Tk 10 crore was filed against Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, editor of ‘Dainik Feni Saam’, in the court of District Senior Judicial Magistrate Ashikur Rahman on Thursday.

The newspaper’s chief reporter Arif Azam has also been made a defendant in the case.

Later, the followers of Anwarul Karim Farooq held a protest meeting in the court premises demanding cancellation of the registration of the newspaper.

District Awami League Forest and Environment Secretary Syed Abul Hossain presided over the meeting held by Advocate Kamrul Hasan. Apart from MP candidate Anwarul Karim Farooq, District Awami League Law Secretary M. Shahjahan Saju and others.

Speakers claimed that Anwarul Karim Farooq is not a ‘dummy candidate’. He is contesting as an independent candidate in the next election on January 7. Although the candidature was canceled in the District Returning Officer’s office, he appealed to the Election Commission and regained his candidature.

The court had not issued any order till Thursday evening.
