The police filed a case in the Sherpur Sadar police station against 70 people, including district BNP general secretary Alhaj Hazrat Ali, on charges of distributing anti-election leaflets, attacking the police and sabotage in Sherpur. Hazrat Ali along with seven BNP and organizational leaders were arrested by the police in this incident.
They were arrested from Harindhara market of Charpakshimari union of Sadar upazila on Tuesday afternoon. In this regard, the officer in charge of Sherpur Sadar police station. Emdadul Haque alleged that during the arrest, BNP workers threw cocktails at them and assaulted them. Four policemen were injured.
The arrested are, General Secretary of Sherpur District BNP Alhaj Hazrat Ali, Organizing Secretary of Sherpur District Chhatra Dal Zakir Hossain, former convenor of Balairchar Union BNP. Badal Hossain, joint convener. Ataur Rahman, Member Secretary of Charpakshmimari Union. Jeevan Mia, joint convener. Manju Mia.
According to the police, the leaders and activists are planning to distribute anti-election leaflets and sabotage the ongoing elections in various markets of Charpakshimari Union of Sherpur Sadar Upazila. When the police went to the spot after receiving such news, there was an argument with the BNP leaders and workers. At one point the accused BNP leader Hazrat Ali was arrested under the warrant. At that time, the agitated leaders and workers attacked the police and threw cocktails. Four policemen were injured. Later, the police fired 17 rounds of shotguns and three rounds of tear shells in self-defence and brought the situation under control.
In this regard, Sherpur district BNP organizing secretary and city BNP president lecturer Mamunur Rashid Palash said, ‘We were preparing to distribute leaflets to promote people not to vote in the upcoming elections. Before that, the police arrested seven people including our leader General Secretary Hazrat Ali on the street. Far from cocktail explosions, we had nothing but leaflets. Our main task is to divert the election by convincing the common people. However, when the local people obstructed the leaders-activists for no reason, the police opened fire on the general public.’
Sherpur Police Additional Superintendent of Police in this regard. Khorshed Alam PPM said that BNP leaders and workers were planning sabotage during the distribution of anti-election leaflets. A police operation was conducted based on such information. They sensed the presence of the police and threw cocktails at the police. The police fired back.

A case has been filed in Sherpur Sadar Police Station in the name of 20 people and 50 other unknown accused in the name of 70 people.
