The commission has summoned boat candidates Bahauddin Bahar and Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu to explain why their candidature was not canceled due to violation of code of conduct. They have been ordered to appear in person next Wednesday.
Two separate letters signed by Deputy Secretary Abdus Salam were issued issuing this directive on Monday.
Allegations against the boat candidate A K M Bahauddin Bahar in Comilla-6 seat- He ordered the leaders and activists to break the arms and legs of the BNP-Jamaat workers in a courtyard meeting. In addition, there were allegations of abuse and beating of journalists.
The inquiry committee recommended the commission to take action on Monday, stating that these incidents have spoiled the polling environment. Later in the night, the commission issued instructions. There, Bahar was ordered to appear in person on Wednesday to explain why the candidature should not be cancelled.
Similarly, EC asked Awami League candidate Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu to appear in Barguna-1 seat on Wednesday. The commission has asked him to explain why his candidature will not be canceled or fined.
Meanwhile, a strict warning came from the EC against several heavyweight candidates on Monday. The commission warned Shakib Al Hasan, a candidate for Magura-1 constituency, about the code of conduct. 4 candidates including boat fees were fined for violating the rules in Narail-2 seat.
Earlier on Sunday, the Election Commission decided to file a case against two Awami League candidates on serious charges of violating the code of conduct. They are Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury of Chittagong-16 Constituency and Abdul Hai of Jhenaidah-1 Constituency.
