Benzema filed a case against the interior minister for alleged links with the Muslim Brotherhood

The Israel-Gaza conflict divides the playing field. Examples of which can be seen in various types of sports including football and off the field. In October 2023, French footballer Karim Benzema condemned Israel’s attacks on Palestinians. It was then that French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin accused Benzema of Muslim Brotherhood involvement.

After that incident, Benzema filed a defamation case against French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin. The 35-year-old French footballer claimed the allegations against him were false, saying the minister’s comments defamed Benzema, his lawyer, Hugh Vigier, said.

Protesting Israel’s invasion of Gaza and supporting the people of Gaza, Benzema Axe (formerly on Twitter) wrote last October, “People, women and children are not being freed from the unjust bombardment.”

After Benzema’s tweet, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin accused him of having links with the Muslim Brotherhood. Darmanin drew arguments behind the allegations. He told a TV channel called Sea News, ‘We are fighting against Hydra (the nine-headed water monster described in Greek mythology), and that is the Muslim Brotherhood. Because they created the environment of Jihad.’

He also said that Benzemata made the comment based on the incident of the death of about 1,300 people in Israel in the surprise attack of Hamas. Benzema’s comments did not express sympathy for the dead Israelis.

At that time, the Saudi League star dismissed the allegations and said that he would take legal action. Benzema finally walked that way. In a 92-page indictment published in French media on Tuesday, Benzema said he had no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood, nor did he know anyone who claimed to be a member of the group.

Meanwhile, Benzema’s lawyer, Hughes Vigier, told French media RTL that the footballer is a victim of politics. He also alleged that the Home Minister was trying to divide France. Darmanin has not yet commented on the lawsuit filed by Benzema.
