The court has granted an application to show the arrest of two accused, including Mohammad Nabi Ullah Nabi, the joint convener of Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP in the case filed in connection with the arson of the Benapole Express train at Gopi Bagh in the capital. The other accused is Munsur Alam, a member of the Dhaka Metropolitan Youth Party.
Senior Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka Julhas Uddin granted the application to show their arrest on Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday (January 9) Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Rabeya Sultana’s court applied to show their arrest, the investigating officer of the case, Dhaka Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ferdaus Ahmed Biswas.
Miscreants set fire to the moving Benapole Express train at around 9 pm on January 5. In this incident, the director (guard) of that train SM Nurul Islam (57) filed a case as plaintiff.
It is mentioned in the statement of the case, the Benapole Express train left Benapole railway station for Dhaka at 1 pm on January 5. As soon as the train reached Syedabad area at around 9:00 pm, the passengers started shouting after seeing the smoke in the coach compartment ‘C’ of train number 7937. Then Muhammad Ali who was on duty in that compartment shouted fire fire and asked the passengers to be careful. At the same time, he tried to stop the train by pulling the chain. But as it did not work, the train was stopped by vacuum press.
The case also states that the train stopped in front of Jame Masjid between Gopi Bagh and Golap Bagh at around 9:20 PM. By then, the fire spread from ‘C’ compartment to ‘C’ compartment and Power Car No. 7526 to ‘B’ compartment. At that time, Nurul Islam, the plaintiff in the case, immediately informed the higher officials about the matter and tried to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher in the train. In addition, he requested to send several teams of fire service on an urgent basis.
The case also mentions that several fire service units arrived at the scene within a short time. Fire Service Railway Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Railway Security Force (RNB), DMP Police and other people present at the spot brought the fire under control around 10:30 pm.
After extinguishing the fire, rescue team of fire service, railway police, RAB, BGB, RNB and DMP police conducted a search and recovered the mutilated bodies of four people including a woman from ‘C’ compartment. Apart from this, 10-12 passengers were seriously injured after jumping from the train. It is known that they are under treatment in different hospitals. Later, the railway police and fire service members sent the dead bodies to Dhaka Medical College (DHMC) Hospital.
