Ballot box fire in Tangail, one center vote cancelled

Ballot boxes with voting papers were set on fire at Gopalpur in Tangail. Later the law enforcement personnel fired 5 rounds. Three Ansar members were injured in this incident.

This incident took place at Kaheta Govt Primary School Center of Hemnagar Union of Upazila around 3:30 pm today. After the incident, the polling of this center was declared cancelled.

The injured Ansar members are Badsha Mia, Abdul Gani and Antaz Ali. They have been admitted to Upazila Health Complex.

Police member Nazmul Hossain said, “The miscreants suddenly entered the center and took out a ballot box containing a voting paper from room number three of the male ward and immediately set it on fire. The ballot box was burnt. There were about three hundred voting papers in the ballot box.’

This policeman also told about firing 5 rounds to recover the ballot papers.

Nazmul Hossain said, “They left the center with the rest of the ballot boxes and the electoral equipment after strengthening the security at the center after the incident.”

Assistant Returning Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syeda Yasmin Sultana said, ‘The polling of 77 centers in Tangail-2 constituency was completed peacefully. After the polling, ballot boxes were set on fire at the Kahata Government Primary School center and Ansar members were beaten up. Later, the police fired 5 rounds of blank bullets to keep the situation calm.

Presiding officer of the center. Mazharul Haque said, “After the independent candidate boycotted the vote, around 3:00 p.m., around two hundred people entered the center and took a ballot box from booth number 3 and set fire to the school grounds. On getting the news, the striking force went and rescued them. Voting at that center was canceled soon after the incident. I have filed a case at the police station in this regard.
