Despite the presence of millions of voters in the twelfth parliamentary elections of Bangladesh, Australia says that the non-participation of all parties is disappointing. In a statement on Wednesday, the Australian government expressed its disappointment with the electoral process in Bangladesh.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement that Australia, as a long-time friend of Bangladesh, is concerned about the pre-election violence and arrests of opposition members. Australia has consistently highlighted the importance of free and fair elections to Bangladesh.

The Government of Australia urges the Government of Bangladesh to strengthen its democratic institutions based on the protection of human rights, the rule of law and the promotion of development.

In this regard, the statement said, Australia is committed to working with Bangladesh as a close partner in achieving the common goal of an open, stable, prosperous and inclusive region.
