Army Principal Staff Officer Lt. General Walker-Uz-Zaman said that the army will be deployed across the country from December 29, subject to the permission of the President, in view of the upcoming National Assembly elections. He also said that the army will be deployed till January 10.
This decision was taken in the meeting of the army with the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday evening.
Walker said, ‘The Election Commission wanted the armed forces to be deployed. The EC will seek permission from the President. He will allow it. We have assured that we will act as the EC wants. EC is serious about making acceptable choices. We will help in free and fair elections. As in the past, the army will be deployed this time.’
However, no decision has been taken on whether the military will be given judicial powers. The EC said that a decision will be taken later.
The EC announced the schedule for the 12th National Assembly elections on November 15 amid opposition from BNP and their allies. According to the schedule, the vote will be held on January 7.
BNP has rejected the election schedule. 15 parties including BNP are not participating in this election. On the other hand, 29 political parties including Awami League-National Party are participating in the elections.
