Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal is going to Bangabhaban to meet President Mohammad Sahabuddin regarding army deployment. The meeting is scheduled to be held at Bangabhaban next Saturday at 11 am.

The Election Commission wants to deploy the army across the country from December 29 ahead of the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections. It is believed that the CEC will seek permission to deploy troops in the meeting.

On December 11, the commission held a meeting with the senior officers of the army regarding the deployment of the army. After the meeting, the Principal Staff Officer of the Army, Lieutenant General Walker-Uz-Zaman told reporters that the army can be deployed across the country from December 29, subject to the permission of the President. Army will be deployed till January 10.

Walker said, ‘The Election Commission wanted the armed forces to be deployed. The EC will seek permission from the President. He will allow it. We have assured that we will act as the EC wants. EC is serious about choosing acceptable. We will help in free and fair elections. As in the past, the army will be deployed this time too.’

However, no decision has been taken on whether the military will be given judicial powers. The EC said at that time that a decision will be taken later.

The EC announced the schedule for the 12th National Assembly elections on November 15 amid opposition from BNP and their allies. According to the schedule, the vote will be held on January 7.

BNP has rejected the election schedule. 15 parties including BNP are not participating in this election. On the other hand, 29 political parties including Awami League-National Party are participating in the elections.
