Antonio Maíllo is looking for a "unit candidacy" for IU and does not rule out heading an alternative list to Sira Rego for "close the internal crisis"

High tension movements in Izquierda Unida in the face of its XIII Assembly from which a new leadership must emerge in the party after the departure of Alberto Garzón as federal coordinator.

After the surprise of the candidacy of Minister Sira Rego for the IU Coordination, now, Izquierda Unida officials in Andalusia have entrusted the former general coordinator of IU Andalucía to begin a round of contacts with the militancy and different IU federations to “articulate a new majority agreement” to create a proposal that is “solid, cohesive and as collegiate as possible as a way out of IU’s internal crisis”, according to several Andalusian media and confirmed by La Razón.

The former coordinator of IU Andalucía has accepted the assignment after the “unilateral step” taken by Sira Rego, according to sources close to the Andalusian leader, who criticize that the minister has “broken the unity agreements reached so far.”

Sources from the IU management report that Maíllo has accepted the task of leading this dialogue process that involves involving the territories in the debate, opening participation with a reinforced municipalist character for an agreement that reflects the sentiment of the militancy from below. . The objective is to present to the Assembly “a new roadmap for IU” and a “renewed political leadership” to replace that of Alberto Garzón.

A proposal that IU sources do not rule out could translate into a candidacy headed by Maíllo himself as general coordinator. It is a possibility that is on the table, they emphasize, although the main objective is “a clear political roadmap that involves activating the role of IU in this phase with a marked municipalist approach, which reflects the feelings of our people below.” , where the formation is strongest”.

According to these sources, Maíllo has shown his willingness to “take on the task” since the Assembly will be the “opportunity to move from a political leadership closed in on itself and alien to the grassroots assemblies to a leadership of road and blanket and dialogue frank, direct and without filters with the militancy”.
