An old woman named Zakia Khatun (65) died in a fire in Daganbhuanya upazila of Feni. At that time Hosne Ara Begum and her daughter Parveen Akhtar (22) ran out and saved their lives.

The accident took place in the house of Ramzan Ali of Dewan Ali’s house in Nayanpur village of East Chandrapur Model Union of Upazila on Friday morning.

Locals said that when they got up for Fajr prayers in the morning, they saw the fire in the house and started shouting and calling the people of the house. When the announcement was made on the mosque’s microphone, people came and took water from the pond and tried to put out the fire. By then, the fire had spread throughout the house. When 999 was called, the fire service came and brought the fire under control within an hour.

A unit of Noakhali’s Senbagh Fire Service and a unit of Feni Fire Service jointly extinguished the fire. The house, kitchen and cowshed were completely gutted in the fire. A paralyzed old woman, Zakia Khatun, who was lying on her bed in the fire, lost her life.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daganbhuna Police Station Abul Hasim said that the burial of the dead body without post-mortem has been allowed at the request of local public representatives and relatives. A case of wrongful death will be registered at the police station in this incident.

Feni Fire Station official Ujjal Badua said, initially it is believed that the fire started from an electrical short circuit. However, the extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained.
