US President Joe Biden said America does not support Taiwan’s independence. He said this while reacting to Taiwan’s election on Saturday local time. This information was reported in the report of the news agency Reuters.

Earlier on Saturday, the country’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won Taiwan’s national election. Through this, the party’s presidential candidate William Lai Ching-tae is going to become the new president of Taiwan. He is known as anti-China.

When asked to respond to this election, Biden said, “We do not support freedom.”

Meanwhile, a few hours before the start of Taiwan’s voting, Washington said in a message that it would be unacceptable to interfere in the election.

China claims the autonomous region of Taiwan as its own. However, since 1996, the island has been under democratic rule. Taiwan was previously plagued by military rule and authoritarian rule.

Although the United States does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the United States provides military assistance to the autonomous region of China.

The Biden administration fears that new elections and a new administration in Taiwan will exacerbate the ongoing conflict with Beijing. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken congratulated Lai Ching Teh for winning the election.

Meanwhile, the US is trying to mend its increasingly strained relationship with China. Biden held a direct meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the California conference last November.

Taiwan’s government fears that China will carry out various activities, including military exercises, to increase pressure on Taiwan after the election.
