The sale of packaged sugar from government mills has been stopped for almost a year. But every shop in the market is selling at the rate of Tk 170 per kg. Vendors say that many anonymous companies are supplying this sugar. Sugar packets are being sold at high prices even though the Directorate of Consumer Protection has conducted raids.
Sugar Industry Corporation is the sole producer and marketer. Sugar from the nine government factories in operation is released to the market through 2500 dealers. The sale of packet sugar has been stopped for almost a year, only sacks of sugar are being released in the market. But sugar is being sold freely in government packets. Open sugar is priced at Tk 125 per kg whereas the sugar in packets is sold at Tk 170.
Buyers say that if the authorities pay attention to this, the situation will definitely be under control.
The price of a packet of sugar is fixed at 140 rupees. Although the sale is closed, it is available in almost all markets including Karwan Bazar, Hatirpool, New Market for Tk 170.
Vendors say either the sugar industry corporation is selling packaged sugar illegally or the dealers are cheating.
Corporation Chairman Sheikh Shoibul Alam was asked about these. But he did not agree to speak in front of the camera.
