Altaf Chowdhury-Major Hafiz 21 months imprisonment

In the case of obstructing the work of the police, Vice Chairman of BNP, former Home Minister and former Chief of the Air Force Air Vice Marshal (retd.) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury and Major (retd) Md. The court ordered Hafiz Uddin Ahmed to be imprisoned for 21 months. The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury gave this verdict on Thursday.

The court ordered this sentence without giving the maximum sentence considering age and physical illness. They have been sentenced to three months imprisonment in one section. In another section, in addition to one and a half years imprisonment, they have been sentenced to a fine of five thousand taka, in default of payment, they have been sentenced to another month in prison.

Besides, five other accused have been sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment in two separate sections. They are MA Awal Khan, Russell, Mainul Islam, Babul Hossain alias Babul and Alamgir Biswas alias Raju.

As the charges against 11 people were not proved, they were acquitted. They are MA Qayyum alias Qayyum Commissioner, Dulal, Tofail Ahmed alias Liton, Jahangir Shikder, Ariful Islam, Belal Hossain, Shamsul Haque Miyaji, Biblab, Khurshid Alam Mumtaz, Mosharraf Hossain and Mahbub.

State counsel confirmed Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu Saja. After presenting the argument of the case on December 24, the court decided the date of the verdict.

According to the statement of the case, on June 4, 2011, BNP leaders and activists gathered ‘illegally’ on the street in front of the Mohakhali Wireless Gate water tank under Gulshan police station in the capital. During this rally, the accused obstructed and attacked the police. Vandalized and set fire to cars running on the road and escaped. In that incident, SI Sheikh Sohel Rana of Gulshan police station named four people and filed the case against 30/40 unknown people.

After investigating the case, on April 29, 2014, SI Kamrul Hasan Talukdar of Gulshan police station filed a charge sheet against the accused in the court. On April 25, 2022, he charged the accused in the case and ordered the trial to begin. During the trial of the case, the court heard the testimony of seven of the 12 witnesses.
