Egypt is not having a good time at the African Nations Cup. The team did not win after playing three matches in the group stage. A ticket to the knockout stage was won by luck. Rui Vitoria’s side have been stuck in bad times with key players injured one after the other, including key star Mohamed Salah.

Egypt will face Congo in the last sixteen of the tournament next Sunday. In that match, the African team sacrificed a cow in hopes of returning good luck. Egyptian football team spokesman Mohamed Moradi confirmed the matter on Friday.

According to Mohamed Morad, the news agency AP reported that a cow was sacrificed on Thursday in hopes of bringing back good fortune to Egypt, which is trapped in a cycle of failure. Later, the meat was distributed among the needy people around the capital Cairo.

Egypt has won the African Nations Cup a record seven times. The team that reached the final last time also came to the competition with the title of hot favorite. Mohamed Salah started the competition with a 2-2 draw with Mozambique in their first match in the group stage.

Salah was injured in the next match against Ghana. Egypt also stumbles (2-2) in that match. In the third and last match of the group stage against Cape Verde, the draw did not leave Egypt behind. They ended the match with a 2-2 goal tie in that match as well.

Despite the failure of other opponents in the group, with three points in three matches, Egypt is confirmed to be the second best in the ‘B’ group and the knock out phase. But even though the last sixteen was confirmed, injuries to one player after another became a headache for Egypt.

Salah, the team’s best player, suffered a hamstring injury in the second match. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Senaoui suffered a shoulder injury in the next match. Meanwhile, Bharasa Imam Ashur of Madhya Math was admitted to the hospital after sustaining a head injury during practice.

The country’s football federation finally decided to sacrifice a cow to spend such a bad time on the field and off the field. Earlier in 2008, they sacrificed a cow before the quarter-finals of the Nations Cup. Egypt later won the tournament.

Egypt will face Congo in the second round on Sunday night in San Pedro. Interestingly, like Egypt, Congo did not win a match in the group stage.
