A farmer named Saiful Islam (38) died after being crushed by an elephant while protecting his crop at Haluaghat in Mymensingh. The incident took place in Mahishleti village of Haluaghat upazila on the border of Indian Garo hills on Monday night.

The deceased Saiful Islam of that village. Son of Abdul Halim alias Falainna. He was a farmer.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Haluaghat Police Station Aminul Islam said, ‘Saiful Islam went to water his onion field on the night of the incident. Meanwhile, a group of Indian elephants came across the border and started destroying his vegetable crops. On this news, the people of the village gathered to chase the elephant. At that time, when the locals went to chase the elephants, a group of elephants attacked them.

Aminul Islam also said, “While others ran away, Saiful Islam was crushed by the elephant’s feet and died on the spot.” Later, when the elephant left, the locals recovered its body. Following the request of the deceased’s family, the body was handed over without post-mortem.
