A boat carrying 185 Rohingyas is floating in dangerous condition in the Indian Ocean. Most of the passengers are women and children. The last known location of the boat was near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to the news agency AFP, the United Nations has called for the quick rescue of the passengers of the boat.
In a statement on Saturday, the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said that 70 children and 88 women were among the boat passengers. The agency said that one person has died so far. Apart from this, the condition of several people is critical. UNHCR warns that many more could die if not rescued in time.
UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch told AFP that all coastal authorities in the region have been contacted to rescue these migrants. All the people on the boat are believed to be Rohingya.
Millions of Rohingyas have taken refuge in Bangladesh after being persecuted in Myanmar. Tens of thousands of Rohingya fleeing asylum centers in Myanmar and Bangladesh each year attempt the dangerous sea crossings to Malaysia and Indonesia. Many people died traveling with such risks.
According to UNHCR, in 2022, more than 2,000 Rohingya attempted to cross the sea to Southeast Asian countries. More than 570 people have lost their lives or gone missing in the region’s seas since last year. Rohingyas are also among them.
