In December last year, another 36 inmates were found to be infected with HIV in the Lucknow District Jail in India. The virus was detected in their bodies during a health check-up in December. There are now 63 inmates with AIDS in the jail.
According to the Indian media NDTV, there were no HIV test kits in September last year. Due to this, the examination is delayed. The test was conducted in December after a delay of several months.
Lucknow district jail authorities say that most of those who have been found to be HIV positive are drug addicts. They took drugs with syringes in the prison premises along with others.
To deal with the situation, HIV patients are being given regular medical care at the hospital. The authorities have taken the initiative to increase the surveillance inside the prison.
Although the number is high, no HIV-infected inmate has died in the last 5 years, authorities said.
