A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan. This earthquake happened early Sunday morning. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.3 on the Richter scale and the depth of the earthquake was 10 km.

The Taiwan Meteorological Bureau said the epicenter of the earthquake was in the deep sea 16.5 kilometers off Taitung County, Taiwan.

News agency Reuters said Taiwan’s eastern coastal region is sparsely populated, so far no casualties have been reported. However, while the earthquake was slightly felt in the larger towns, no tremors were felt in the capital, Taipei.

Taiwan is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates. As a result, meteorologists consider it an earthquake-prone area.
