The court sentenced 5 accused to death for killing a woman after gang rape in Shariatpur. Shariatpur Women and Children Torture Suppression Tribunal Judge Md. Sohel Ahmed announced the verdict. Besides, each accused has been fined 1 lakh rupees.
Those sentenced to death are Nizam Bali (45), Mohammad Ali (35), Omar Farooq Bepari (24), Al Amin Bepari (20) and Ibrahim Molla (21).
All the convicts are residents of Dakshin Sutalkathi of Damudya Upazila. 2 accused were present in the court when the judgment was pronounced. They have been sent to the district jail on the orders of the court. And three accused are absconding.
According to the statement of the case, 55-year-old woman Feroza Begum of Bhuiyan Bazar area of Dhankathi Union of Damudya Upazila disappeared from her house at around 5 pm on April 18, 2019. On April 21, the police recovered the body of Abdur Rahman Master with a broken arm and head injuries from an abandoned pond on the east side of his house in Bara Nowga area of East Damudya Union, 10 kilometers away from the house.
The next day Feroza’s younger brother Lal Mia Sardar filed a murder case in the Shariatpur court naming 13 people and 2-3 others as unknown accused. As five of the accused were involved, the police issued a charge sheet against them. The rest of the accused were acquitted.
Later on April 28 Nizam Bali was arrested by the police. Omar Farooq and Mohammad Ali were arrested the next day. They confessed to the court about killing the woman after rape. And two other accused Ibrahim and Al-Amin are absconding. And Omar Farooq is absconding on bail. Later, the police submitted a charge sheet against the 5 people in the court. After hearing the testimony of 22 people, the Shariatpur Women and Children Torture Prevention Tribunal gave its verdict this afternoon.
Doctor Shah Jalal Howladar, son of the deceased Feroza Begum, said, ‘We are happy with the verdict. Demand to the government that this judgment be implemented quickly.
Advocate Feroze Ahmed, the government counsel of the Shariatpur Women and Children Torture Prevention Tribunal, said, ‘This is a historic murder verdict. A woman was gang-raped and brutally murdered. The court has ordered death penalty to five accused in this case. We the state side are satisfied with this verdict.
However, Nasreen Akhter, the lawyer of the defendant, expressed dissatisfaction with this verdict and said, ‘We are not satisfied with this verdict. The verdict will be appealed to the High Court.’
