Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has formed a 5-member investigation committee into the incident of ferry sinking in Manikganj’s Paturia. BIWTC Director (Trade) SM Ashikuzzaman confirmed this information.
Ashikuzzamana told Independent Television that a 5-member investigation committee has been formed in the ferry sinking incident. This committee will report within next 5 working days.
Director of BIWTC Ashikuzzaman said, utility ferry ‘Rajnigandha’ was built in 2014. The weight of this boat is about 250 tons. As BIWTA’s rescue ships ‘Hamza’ and ‘Rustam’ are not capable of lifting heavy vessels, BIWTA’s rescue ships Nirbhaya and Pratyaya are being brought to the accident site.
Director of BIWTC said, ‘We are all on the spot. Here is Hamza. The trucks will be rescued by Hamza.’
Earlier on Wednesday at 8:30 am, the Rajnigandhya ferry anchored at Paturia’s ghat number 5 sank due to the impact of the bulkhead. BIWTCA’s Paturia Ghat manager Abdus Salam said the ferry was anchored along with the truck. A sandbar bulkhead rammed the ferry out of sight in thick fog. The ferry sank.
According to the fire service, 6 people have been rescued alive so far in this incident. However, no casualty has been reported yet.
