Maheshpur-58 BGB arrested two smugglers along with 23 gold bars worth about Tk 5 crore from the toolbox of an easybike in the border area of Chuadanga district.
They were arrested along with gold from Jibannagar Uthali area of the district on Tuesday afternoon. Maheshpur 58 BGB director Lt Col Masud Parvez Rana confirmed the matter.
The arrested are Pintu Biswas (50) son of deceased Munsur Biswas of Chuadanga Darshana Dakshin Chandpur village and Piyas Hossain (21) son of deceased Asadul Haque of Darshana Ishwarchandrapur village.
Lieutenant Colonel Masood Parvez Rana said that a special patrol team of the battalion headquarters was stationed in the Utholi BOP area on the Jibannagar Uthli border based on intelligence information that gold would be smuggled. At 12 noon, an easy bike going towards the border was challenged and 23 small gold bars weighing 5 kg 197.97 grams were recovered from the front toolbox wrapped in black scotch tape in a plastic bag.
The estimated market value of these recovered gold bars is about 4 crore 90 lakh 87 thousand 520 taka. Colonel Masood Parvez Rana also said that the people accused of transporting the gold bars to India for smuggling and keeping them under their custody were arrested and their used mobile phones and easy bikes were seized.
He also informed that the arrestees have filed a case at Jeevannagar Police Station and deposited the gold bars at the Chuadanga Treasury Office.
